(Lheidli T’enneh Territory, Prince George, BC September 27, 2019) – BC Assembly of First Nations Regional Chief Terry Teegee is joining the global climate strike today at 1 pm at the Vancouver City Hall, joining millions of young people marching around the world who are calling for urgent action to defend the only house that we have in common: our Mother Earth. Youth climate strikers are asking adults to join them.

Regional Chief Terry Teegee stated: “As a father of two children who have their future threatened by our current inaction to address the climate emergency, I stand with the climate strikers. I want all our children and future generations to enjoy the same rights and bounty that we have been blessed with for many generations, and that is now in jeopardy. Our ancestors passed on the knowledge and the sacred responsibility to care for our homelands and waters.”

Many young indigenous people are also marching today around the world: “I am proud to be joining the youth in this march to raise awareness about the looming catastrophe and to call for immediate and substantive action by our governments and our communities to respond. Other indigenous youth climate warriors are speaking out and leading with their actions. We are inspired by youth such as Autumn Peltier who will be making interventions at the United Nations. We stand in support of their important work. The time for action is NOW”, said Regional Chief Terry Teegee.

Last March, the BCAFN Chiefs-in-assembly passed Resolution 04/2019 calling on the First Nations Leadership Council to develop a First Nations Climate Change Strategy that will include a just transition plan. The climate emergency is a priority and the First Nation Leadership Council, together with First Nations in BC, will develop tools to prepare for the effects of climate change, and also identify actions to lower greenhouse gas emissions.
